Sodium vapour lamps replaced with induction lamps

Chennai Corporation has replaced the sodium vapour high-mast lamps at the Pantheon Road junction near the Police Commissioner's Office with the energy-efficient induction lamps.
Officials of the Corporation said the two sodium vapour lamps in each of the 12 fittings on the high mast have been replaced with one induction lamp on Friday.
The new lamps would provide the same level of illumination and were installed on a pilot basis.
The 10-kilowatt sodium vapour lamps have been replaced by 2.75-kilowatt induction lamps. It is expected to reduce the energy consumption by a minimum of 30 per cent.If successful, all high-mast sodium vapour lamps would be replaced with the induction lamps.
There are about 115 high-mast sodium vapour lamps at important junctions, including at Valluvar Kottam, Pantheon Road, Kamarajar Salai, TTK Road and Poonamallee High Road, said an official.
The civic body has already installed 20 induction lamps for street illumination at a cost of Rs.1.50 lakh on Subbarao Avenue, Nungambakkam, on a trial basis.
By switching over to the induction lamps, the civic body aims to limit the monthly electricity bills for streetlights up to Rs.1.35 crore. The Corporation is also studying the viability of using LED (light-emitting diode) lamps for street illumination.

Here’s more from Hyland:

Nokia E-Cu (E for environment, Cu for Copper)
Heat-conductive charging system Creating a charger-free cellphone future
Annually, unwanted phone chargers produce 51,000 tons of waste in addition to the greenhouse gases created by the production of the electricity needed to charge them.
Nokia E-Cu by Patrick Hyland
The Nokia E-Cu is a mobile phone charged by sources of heat therefore eradicating the need for a charger. The phone has a thermogenerator integrated inside, which converts heat energy into electric potential energy.

It is surrounded by copper with engraved heatsinks in a dry earth pattern which represents the effect of heat on the natural environment. The phone can be charged by placing it on any source of heat e.g. a radiator, even inside a pocket.

What the UID conceals

The UID project has both ‘security' and ‘developmental' dimensions. The former leads to an invasive state; the latter leaves us with a retreating state.
Is identity the “missing link” in India's efforts to rise as an “inclusive” economic superpower? Can an identity-linked and technology-based solution change the face of governance in India? Given the euphoria around the Unique Identification (UID) project, one is tempted to believe so. However, a careful look at the project would show that the euphoria is just hyperbole; only the politically naïve can afford to ignore the far-reaching implications of this Orwellian project. One can summarise the criticisms of the UID project under four heads. First, the project would necessarily entail the violation of privacy and civil liberties of people. Second, it remains unclear whether biometric technology — the cornerstone of the project – is capable of the gigantic task of de-duplication. The Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) “Biometrics Standards Committee” has noted that retaining biometric efficiency for a database of more than one billion persons “has not been adequately analysed” and the problem of fingerprint quality in India “has not been studied in depth”. Third, there has been no cost-benefit analysis or feasibility report for the project till now. Finally, the purported benefits of the project in the social sector, such as in the Public Distribution System (PDS), are largely illusive. The problem of duplicate ration cards is often hugely exaggerated. Even so, some States have largely eliminated duplicate ration cards using “lower” technologies like hologram-enabled ration cards. In this larger context, the UID project has two distinct political dimensions. The first dimension is that the project is fundamentally linked to “national security” concerns rather than “developmental” concerns. In fact, the marketing team of the UIDAI has always been on an overdrive to hush up the security angle, and play up the developmental angle, to render it more appealing. The first phase of today's UID project was initiated in 1999 by the NDA government in the wake of the Kargil War. Following the reports of the “Kargil Review Committee” in 2000, and a Group of Ministers in 2001, the NDA government decided to compulsorily register all citizens into a “National Population Register” (NPR) and issue a Multi-purpose National Identity Card (MNIC) to each citizen. To ease this process, clauses related to individual privacy in the Citizenship Act of 1955 were weakened through an amendment in 2003. In sum, the ground work for a national ID project was completed by 2003 itself.
The parallels between the UPA's UID and the NDA's MNIC are too evident to be missed, even as the UPA sells UID as a purely “developmental” initiative. The former chief of the Intelligence Bureau, A.K. Doval, almost gave it away recently, when he said that UID, originally, “was intended to wash out the aliens and unauthorised people. But the focus appears to be shifting. Now, it is being projected as more development-oriented, lest it ruffle any feathers”.The potential of the project to unleash a security frenzy is the reason why privacy concerns have to be taken seriously. The government and the UIDAI have made it appear as if the purported, and unsubstantiated, benefits of “good governance” from the project eclipse the concerns regarding privacy and civil liberties. This is where the problem lies. A foundational understanding in the study of individual freedoms, pioneered by scholars like Amartya Sen, is that consequence-independent absolute rights are rather hard to defend. Hence, the demand to trade-off one freedom for another (here, the “invasive loss” of privacy for “development”) is an untenable demand. Each freedom, independently, has an instrumental value, and the loss of one freedom undermines the individual's overall capability to expand up on other freedoms. No wonder then that Sen himself has voiced the privacy concern regarding the UID project. There is a related concern: police and security forces, if allowed access to the biometric database, could extensively use it for regular surveillance and investigative purposes, leading to a number of human rights violations. As Amartya Sen has argued elsewhere, forced disclosure and loss of privacy always entailed “the social costs of the associated programmes of investigation and policing”. According to him, “some of these investigations can be particularly nasty, treating each applicant as a potential criminal.”
The second dimension of the UID project is the following: it would qualitatively restructure the role of the state in the social sector. Contrary to claims, the UID project is not an instrument to expand India's social security system, for whatever it is worth. Instead, the aim is to keep benefits restricted to the so-called “targeted” sections, ensure targeting with precision and thereby, limit the government's expenditure commitments. None other than the Prime Minister has made this amply clear. Addressing the National Development Council (NDC) on July 24, 2010, he noted: “to reduce our fiscal deficit in the coming years, … we must [be] … reducing the scale of untargeted subsidies. The operationalisation of the Unique Identification Number Scheme … provides an opportunity to target subsidies effectively.”
The UIDAI claims that UID would help the government shift from a number of indirect benefits into direct benefits. In reality, such a shift would represent the opposite: a transformation of the role of the state from a direct provider to an indirect provider. For the UIDAI, the UID is a tool of empowerment. In reality, the UID would be an alibi for the state to leave the citizen unmarked in the market for social services. Nowhere is the illustration more telling than in the case of the PDS.Let me state the argument upfront. The UID project is part of a larger effort to dismantle the PDS in India. The aim is to ensure a back-door entry of food stamps in the place of PDS, and later graduate it to a cash transfer scheme, thereby completing the state's withdrawal from the sphere of food procurement and distribution.According to the UIDAI, the most important benefit from the UID could be that you could have a “portable” PDS. In other words, you could have a system where you (say, a migrant worker) could buy your PDS quota from anywhere in India. The claim, of course, has a deceptive appeal. One would have to dig deeper to grasp the real intent.
If we take the present fair price shop (FPS) system, each FPS has a specified number of households registered to it. The FPS stores grains only for the registered households. The FPS owner would not know how many migrants, and for what periods, would come in and demand their quota. Hence, for lack of stock, he would turn away migrant workers who demand grains. Hence, the FPS system is incompatible with the UID-linked portability of PDS. There is only one way out: do away with the FPS system, accredit grocery shops to sell grains, allow them to compete with each other and allow the shop owners to get the subsidy reimbursed. This is precisely what food stamps are all about; no FPS, you get food stamps worth an amount, go to any shop and buy grains (on why food stamps are deeply problematic, see Madhura Swaminathan, “Targeted Food Stamps”, The Hindu, August 3, 2004).
What is interesting is that everyone, except those enamoured by the UID glitter, appears to know this. On its part, UIDAI officially accepts that food stamps become easier to implement with the UID. So does the Planning Commission, which sees the UID as the fulcrum around which its plans to “reform” the PDS revolve. It turns out that an opposition to the dismantling of PDS, and to food stamps, also involves an opposition to the UID.On his part, Nandan Nilekani has been showcasing his extraordinarily poor understanding of India's developmental priorities. According to him, “in the Indira years, the slogan was garibi hatao. Then it was roti, kapda, makaan. In the last few years, it was bijli, sadak, pani.” However, these slogans are “passé”; the in-thing is the slogan “UID number, bank account, mobile phone.” Such an inverted world view, totally divorced from the grim realities of poverty, has prompted critics to call AADHAAR as just NIRAADHAAR!In conclusion, the UID project is marked by both “security” and “developmental” dimensions. The former leads to an invasive state; the latter leaves us with a retreating state. Either way, the “citizen” is worse off.

India develops first Laser Guided Bomb

Dehradun: India has developed its first Laser Guided Bomb (LGB), a weapon that can hit a target with greater accuracy, with technological support from city-based Instrument Research and Development Establishment (IRDE).The development of technology for producing Laser Guided Bomb is part of ongoing research towards achieving self-dependency in the defence area being done in IRDE, a lab of DRDO, Scientist and Public Relation Officer of IRDE told PTI. The LGB uses a laser desgnator to mark or illuminate a target. The reflected laser light from the target is then detected by the seeker which sends signals to the weapon's control surfaces to guide it towards the designated point, he said.
Bangalore-based Aeronautics Development Establishment (ADE) has developed the guidance-kit for 1000-pound LGBs and these are designed to improve the accuracy of air-to-ground bombing by IAF.The guidance kit of LGB consists of a computer control group (CCG), guidance canards attached to the front of the warhead for providing steering commands and a wing assembly attached to the aft end to provide lift.
India had already carried out two successful flight trials of LGB for the IAF to test the effectiveness of the guidance and control systems at Chandipur integrated test range in Orissa early this year.LGBs are manoeuvrable, free-fall weapons requiring no electronic interconnect to the aircraft and attack the target with higher accuracy and reliability. The LGBs were first developed by USA in 1960s. Later, Russia, France and Britain also developed them.

Fitted with the jet attachment Halo 120 degrees, it allows a maximum speed of Mach 2 at a height of up to 20,000 metres. The Halo 46 degrees offers helicopter flight version for hasty businessmen. The maximum speed is 185 knots. The Halo 22 degrees speedboat attachment features a racing hull providing up to 63 knots and a range of 1,200 nautical miles.
With looming traffic chaos in the big mega cities, Pauley hopes his concept will catch on with the big car producers or at least influence the design of the cars of the future.

Radia Concept Phone!

SlashPhone writes about this concept phone: “As cellular phones become a standard, the statement they make as a symbol and a fashion accessory has become increasingly important. The Radia phone concept expresses simplicity in form and sophistication in function and user interface. The outer rim, which is made of brushed aluminum makes both a refined professional statement.”
“The touch-display is large enough to read and display many types of information, yet small enough to maintain a pocket-sized device. Simplicity is also expressed in the power button, which is flanked by the earpiece speaker, and balanced by the microphone which is 180 degrees around the perimeter.”

Follow The Rabbit Concept Bike

Everyone loves to help keep the Earth clean. It lets us sleep better at night knowing we did our part for that particular day. I’m sure that Snickers wrapper you picked up and chucked in the trash can will save the ice shelf. Riding this concept bike called the Rabbit is kind of like that. Sure, you’re helping the environment out but you stilllook like a retard when you’re riding this thing. Don’t complain to me, complain to creator Felipe Tolomei. The final design is supposed to have two small electric engines to power this three-wheeled monstrosity.

Indian grads app becomes a huge hit after Steve Jobs' praises

Bangalore: "That was really special. We got the biggest stamp of approval we could have gotten," says Akshay Kothari Co-founder and CEO of Alphonso Labs, which produced the Pulse app, referring to the endorsement from Apple CEO, Steve Jobs. The young Indian grads from Stanford University saw a significant boost when the Apple Guru heaped praises upon their iPad application at the Apple Developers Conference. Pulse is an elegant news reading application for iPhone, iPad and Android devices created by Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta. This mobile application aggregates news from numerous websites and is one of the top-selling news apps for the iPad and iPhone. Its Android app allows users to assemble content from as many as 60 publications. Users also can touch a link that takes them to the actual publication's website.

The company has launched version 2.0 of their Pulse News Reader for iPad. The revised version, Pulse 2.0 expanded to 60 sources of news across five pages, or 12 feeds per page. It is also designed in a way that the user can manage news feed sources. Another interesting feature in the new version called "Pulse Bazaar", provides a way to browse and discover good news sources that you didn't know about. As of now, Pulse 2.0 is an iPad-only app. It is expected that the company will release a new version for the iPhone and Android platforms in the coming weeks.

The idea was sparked at a Stanford course called 'Launch Pad' for aspiring entrepreneurs in which challenge was to create a product in the course of 11 weeks. "The first week of class, we decided we're going to do something for our iPads, and we released our app in six weeks," Kothari said. After the success of the app, Alphonso Labs now has six full-time employees and is moving to an office space of its own.

Although the company had a short period of trouble when Apple removed Pulse from the store following complaints of infringement by the New York Times, it was later reinstated upon clarifying that Pulse is essentially an RSS reader and does no scraping. It is also reported that Alphonso Labs has raised $1 million in seed funding from Redpoint Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Mayfield Fund and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The Pulse app for iPad costs $1.99 and 99 cents for the iPhone and mobile Android devices. However, the company declined to disclose revenue figures. The biggest competitor for Pulse is Flipboard which also has got great reviews for its products.
